Sleeping with a Toddler Sucks

We should still be hanging out with my in-laws, out of town, but Tucker was sick.  AGAIN.  I’d heard rumors that once kids start preschool that they’re sick A LOT, but sortof felt immune, and figured the anti-germ death rays collected in the millions of community activities we’ve participated in might have prepared his immune system for being exposed to ill, ill, and ill.  They didn’t.

He’s not so sick that I’ve really got much of a right to complain.

Except for this.

When we stay with my in-laws, Tucker sleeps in our room.  It’s usually not a problem.  Unless he’s SICK and wakes up coughing or wiping his nose or whatever he’s doing and he can see us.  Right there.  And wants to get in bed with us (who can blame him?  We are pretty good snugglers, after all…).  So last night, after I stayed up too late drinking scotch talking about really important holiday stuff with my mother in law, I went up to find Tucker already in our bed, sleeping peacefully with Robert.  Aw.  Heartmelt.

Or so I thought.

Turns out, there is a total disconnect between the imagined sweetness of sleeping with your darling three-year old boy and the reality of sleeping with your apparently restless three-year old boy.

I came upstairs to see the lovemush that comes from witnessing this:

And so of course, I imagine this:

But instead, get this:

And this:

And this:

Yes, Tucker is SITTING ON MY HEAD.

And, finally, this…

It’s the day after Thanksgiving and I’m more thankful than I know how to articulate that I have my beautiful son, my loving husband, our health, our wonderful extended families, those that bless us with their amazingness through friendship, and, well, for EVERYTHING.  But right now, on black Friday, sitting here posting this while getting ready for bed, I’m thankful that we’re home.  And that my darling sweet sick son is in his own bed.  In his own room.  And not sitting on my head.

Although, it IS early.  So, we’ll see…

I hope everybody had a great Thanksgiving.

I’m sharing this post today (in April 2013) in Second Chance Sunday – created by Moms Who Write and Blog.  Thanks guys!

  • Henriette - Yup, those drawings pretty much sums up my life!
    Sick toddler – check
Sick toddler in bed – check
No sleep since – too many days to even remember, – check

Don’t even get me started on taking said sick toddler to a doctor the day after TG! Took us 3 1/2 hours of waiting, diagnosed with ear infection and acute upper respiratory infection. Got the meds, looking forward to some sleep. Eventually. 🙂November 23, 2012 – 11:19 pmReplyCancel

    • admin - Oh no! UGH. Hope your bebe is better SOON and that you can finally get some sleep. Them being in the bed always sounds good. But, it’s really ugly to wake up with a butt on your head, a finger up your nose, or a foot in your face.
Here’s to happy dreams, tonight! For all of you! 🙂November 23, 2012 – 11:47 pmReplyCancel

  • Pam - This is hilarious. Thanks for sharing your family with all of us. I really enjoy your posts.November 24, 2012 – 4:50 pmReplyCancel

  • Shell - Love your drawings! Having any of my kids end up sleeping in my bed- never ends well. They are bed hogs and no matter how they sleep, find a way to kick me in the head.November 25, 2012 – 2:51 pmReplyCancel

    • admin - Thanks, Shell! It must be programed into them to kick us in the head. Thanks for visiting. And commenting! Yay, to comments…November 25, 2012 – 6:15 pmReplyCancel

  • Deb @ Urban Moo Cow - Ha! It’s so true. I don’t understand how people ever sleep with their kids. H either tries to divebomb off the bed or play with my hair, nose, whatever…

Your son is super cute, btw.

    Did you do a site redesign?April 28, 2013 – 3:25 pmReplyCancel

  • Kristi - Hey Deb,
I did actually do a site redesign. I used Julie from Fabulous Blogging and she did a great job. If you’re interested (not that you need it because you DO NOT but she also helps if you’ve got admin questions), please let her know that I sent you – she’s started a referral program recently. Thanks for the comment! Oh and I think Tucker’s pretty cute myself. As is Henry! Adorable little boys 🙂April 28, 2013 – 3:47 pmReplyCancel

  • Stephanie @ Life, Unexpectedly - Oh my goodness, this is awesome, love the images 🙂 So know that! How can a 25-inch baby can take up an entire king-size bed? Our girls were horrible co-sleepers as babies, but now they are usually pretty awesome, except when they are sick. Hope your little one got past the bug-phase quickly!April 28, 2013 – 3:57 pmReplyCancel

  • Jen - Don’t tell anyone, but Isaiah still sleeps with us. Last night I woke up to excruciating pain in my side and it was his bowling ball head trying to push me off the bed! BTW did laugh out loud at the pictures as always!April 28, 2013 – 11:46 pmReplyCancel
