The above photo shows Tucker and me in December of this year. While you can see that I am wrinkled and it is fairly obvious that I am not a teen mom, I do not have blue hair. Or a bun. Or dentures. Or a cane. You know, the stuff that normal not-a-redneck people associate with being a grandma. It’s not like I’m here just yet, is what I’m saying.
“What in the hell is she talking about?” you ask? Well, more than a year ago, a Georgia redneck (should that be Georgian?) ruined my day. I still think about it and wonder what I should have said. Intrigued? Awesome! To find out how an insensitive redneck ruined my day, visit the fabulous Families in the Loop site. There, you can read the whole story written in my crappy words that should have been much better but I freeze up when writing for other people.

Kerri - Damn rednecks. Seriously you don’t have teen acne so you must be a grandmother? YIKES With the bar set so low it is no wonder their …. okay I as going to get nasty. I think when it comes to age it is like asking a woman if she is pregnant. Don’t ask unless you know the answer for sure!April 17, 2013 – 1:39 pm
Kristi - Exactly, Kerri! Don’t ask if you’re not sure! (oh and sometimes, for whatever reason, I totally DO have teenage acne. acne that I did not have as a teen. go figure.)April 17, 2013 – 9:59 pm
Alicia D - Love your new masthead!!April 17, 2013 – 2:27 pm
Kristi - Thank you, me too! Julie from Fabulous Blogging is responsible. She’s freaking awesome. Seriously.April 17, 2013 – 9:59 pm
MJM - Girl…stop playing…you know you got it going on like the funky cold medina. Don’t sweat what the haters say…haters are going to hate…it’s just who they are.April 17, 2013 – 2:32 pm
Kristi - HAHA I do have the funky cold medina in my repertoire. Which maybe just proves I’m old? Thanks, friend.April 17, 2013 – 10:00 pm
Joy - Really?? You are thought to be his grandma? You are joking, right? In my neck of the woods it is not uncommon at all to have kids at our age and no one would ever think you would be his granny! I think this is impertinent!
Oh, and I LOVE your new blog layout! Very nice!April 17, 2013 – 3:46 pm
Kristi - Joy, my sweets. Sadly, yes. Especially in Georgia. You’ve heard how different (and not to say anything about Georgia in general) that the US is right? Well, as is everywhere. It’s such a huge country and our lifestyles differ a LOT from state to state. Even when you’re in a state, lifestyles and beliefs differ a lot. Like here, where I am, is Virginia. But we are very close to DC so as a community, we are considered (votes, etc) more liberal then they are in Southern Virginia.
And I remember when I was pregnant, Europe gave me lots of hope when it came to what age women have children. I think in those things, Europe is very ahead of the US.
Thank you about the new blog layout – I love it too 😀
Julie from Fabulous Blogging did it – if you ever want a consultation, she is very reasonable, very talented and nice, too. Which means a lot.April 17, 2013 – 10:04 pm
Kenya G. Johnson - I’ll comment on this post first and say OOOOOOOOO, everything looks so nice and efficient. Love the never miss a post slide in book promotion thing and the Tucker banner. I’m going to subscribe to this one. Can you find out how to unsubscribe to the other one? I get it three times for one post. I know I was inpatient because I didn’t get a new post the first time I did it, so I did it again. And maybe I did it again and it must have taken a few days to take? I don’t know…. ramble ramble rambleApril 17, 2013 – 3:50 pm
Kristi - HAHAH woman, I love that you maybe entered your email three times to get updates because you ROCK. And the truth is, you probably didn’t get updates because, well, my life gets in the way of blogging and writing as much as I’d like. Funny how a three year old (maybe) autistic boy, a part time job and well, showers (damn them) get in the way of the rest, huh? Yes, I will delete you as a user from the old account. But only if you promise that if the new one didn’t take, that you re-up. I’m not sure what Julie (Fabulous Blogging) was doing at the moment you commented, but my blog was under construction for most of this afternoon.April 17, 2013 – 10:07 pm
Kenya G. Johnson - Oooooh it’s pretty on the iPhone too! I’m definitely subscribed. I’ve got my confirmation and everything. 😉 just in case my name doesn’t show my email is sporadicpublication@me.comApril 17, 2013 – 10:27 pm
Kristi - YAYYY !!! Ok I’m going to my crap old plugin and deleting you now. And thanks for subscribing you!April 17, 2013 – 10:34 pm
Kristi - YAY. Ok so i asked Julie and you should just “unsubscribe” from the first one. If I do it, I’m scared it will unlink to all your awesome comments…maybe it wouldn’t but HELLO there are 37 at least on here, right?April 17, 2013 – 11:34 pm
Melissa@Home on Deranged - Well, old lady, you know how I feel about this. My worst was in the doctor’s office with my youngest when she was about 6 months. A woman – very loudly across the waiting room – asked if I was the grandma. I politely said, “no, I’m the mom.” To which she said, “I don’t know how you people do it. I was done with all of mine by the time I was 40.” I didn’t respond, but she kept talking. You could see others in the waiting room cringing and physically turning the body from her. I think most people know better than to say anything – kinda like, don’t ask a woman if she’s pregnant unless the baby is falling out of her. lol
Love the site. Love you. You are beautiful. So is your baby. 🙂April 18, 2013 – 12:42 am
Kristi - Melissa, you are awesome. Although it sucks that you experienced the same thing, I’m glad I’m not alone…and YES don’t ask! Ever. Sigh.
Thanks so much for the love. Love you back, friend.April 18, 2013 – 7:22 am
Joy - Well, of course I am aware that lifestyles are different everywhere. But I still think it is ignorant. It is just like asking a fat woman when her due date is. You can think it, but not say it.
The layout is really, really lovely. However, I think the comment section was better in the old layout because it was possible to answer a comment directly. Is is possible to change to that here, too? I think it was more clearly arranged.April 18, 2013 – 2:22 am
Kristi - Exactly! You can think it but don’t say it! And I’ve already asked Julie to fix the comment thing – I tried to do so last night but I couldn’t see how. Thanks so much!April 18, 2013 – 7:22 am
Julie Chenell DeNeen - Well I’ve installed Comment Luv but I’m not sure it’s going to give me the reply button, so I’m testing it out by commenting. 😛April 18, 2013 – 7:34 am
Janine Huldie - I am so loving the new blog look and knew I would since Julie had a hand in this. she truly is awesome and the blog design is just perfect for you!! 🙂April 18, 2013 – 7:54 am
Kristi - Thanks, Janine! I really love it too. And yeah, Julie’s pretty amazing.April 18, 2013 – 8:01 am
Stephanie @ Mommy, for real. - I absolutely LOVE this new look- it’s the perfect design for you! I love the slideshow photos, the definition, the welcome…it’s so f-ing awesome. Like you! Can’t wait to read your FITL post! I’ll comment there, too, unless someone here craps their pants before I get a chance. Which is a distinct possibility.April 18, 2013 – 9:49 am
Julie Chenell DeNeen - So this is cool Kristi Rieger Campbell. Who’s your awesome designer who figured this out? 🙂April 18, 2013 – 11:45 am
Finding Ninee - The Finding Ninee blog got beautified by Julie Chenell DeNeen of Fabulous Blogging. If you missed the amazement of how she took me from cute to awesome in a single afternoon, check out the new look! https://www.findingninee.com/April 18, 2013 – 12:00 pm
Jen - I looooooooooove your new look!!! I am heading over to your post now!April 18, 2013 – 12:19 pm
Kristi - Thanks, Jen! I love it too! Now, I just have to spend some time playing with all my cool new features and figuring them out!April 18, 2013 – 5:23 pm
Rachel - Beautiful mama, I nominated you for an award. http://taoofpoop.blogspot.com/2013/04/beautiful-mama.htmlApril 18, 2013 – 12:55 pm
Kristi - Aw, thanks, Rachel. ‘Tis you who are the beautiful mama! I choose to accept with love and grace rather than anxiety over nominating other people.April 18, 2013 – 5:24 pm
Diana Chastain - I’m from Georgia. Not all people that live here are red necks. I promise.April 18, 2013 – 4:01 pm
Jessica Torres Dy - I LOVED your article! I’m an older mom too, so you’re not alone! I’m happy to have had my 2 year old son @ a later age :). Yaay for older moms!April 18, 2013 – 5:29 pm
Kristi - Stephanie,
I’m still getting used to this new comment interface. It doesn’t keep my replies with the person’s comment (boo). But thank you! I love it too. Heading over to FITL now to see whether somebody crapped their pants before you had a chance to go.
Jen, I looooooooooove it too! Have fun talking to Julie tonight – she’s brilliant. And nice, too. Go figure.April 18, 2013 – 5:43 pm
Katia Bishofs - OK, I don’t know about you, but I’m intrigued. I’m heading down to Families in the Loop to join you in not knowing how to tell off the redneck.April 18, 2013 – 7:17 pm
Emily Mitty Cappo - I will try to comment in both places…I know how you feel. I had my 3rd son at 38 and when I meet the moms who have a kid the same age as my son and he or she is their FIRST child, then that said momma is usually (but not always like in your case) quite a bit younger than me. When we talk about the year we graduated college and stuff like that, I always preface it by saying, “I’m old!” They never disagree either. 🙂April 18, 2013 – 8:10 pm
Courtney - Kristi, first I have to say, I LOVE LOVE LOVE your new blog design! I am super jealous and it’s so neat! Congrats. Also, Fabulous new photos. You have a beautiful family.April 18, 2013 – 9:06 pm
Kristi - Courtney, thank you! I appreciate it!!! And don’t be jealous because your photos are amazing. The ones I have that are amazing? Taken by other people… I still need to get that camera.April 19, 2013 – 12:21 am
Meg Bruener Hodson - I never get surprised anymore when people act lame! I would consider myself an “oldish” Mom, but who cares? I would hate to think that people are measuring the standard of parental age based on dumb shows like Teen Mom! I loved waiting to have children. People can be so insensitive, uninformed, and they usually don’t know what they’re talking about. Plus, they obviously haven’t walked in your shoes. I was once at a fast food restaurant with my daughter’s soccer team and my two young sons and I were at a nearby table as her team enjoyed a treat. Well, boys will be boys and they soon were walking around, playing with a small toy area, basically being boys! All the while, I am following them, saying “don’t do that”, etc. Some lady had the nerve to come up to me and say “you need to control your kids more” (please hear these words from a voice that sounded like she was a 2 pack a day smoker and it had been a while since she might have had wee ones running around her feet). I didn’t even know what to say! “Um, I’m doing the best that I can?” My point is, people are insensitive, don’t really think about what they say sometimes, and quite honestly, are just plain STUPID!
Enjoy your time with your son!
Happy Kids, Inc.April 18, 2013 – 9:26 pm
Shay - I commented there and here b/c that’s how much I looooove you. And love the new look of the blog, too! Congrats on the guest post!April 19, 2013 – 10:45 am
Kristi - You, my friend are freaking AWESOME. Thank you 😀
And I loooooooooove you back!April 19, 2013 – 2:23 pm
Shay - All subscribed, girlfriend!!April 21, 2013 – 12:58 am
Kristi - Have I said I looooooooove you? No? Yes I have. But I’ll say it again – you’re one funny chick and I loooooooove you 😀April 21, 2013 – 9:34 am
Deb @ Urban Moo Cow - I’m commenting in both places too because I want to reiterate that you are awesome and should move to Brooklyn. 🙂April 29, 2013 – 10:43 am
Kristi - Deb,
Thank you so much. You’re pretty awesome yourself and I’d love to move to Brooklyn but Tucker’s school here is SO GOOD. So howz about YOU move to DC? Okie dokie? Cool. 😀April 29, 2013 – 12:53 pm
Kristi - Deb-
It is YOU who is the awesome one! Thanks so much for the comment – I really appreciate it! And in both places, too! Wow. Thanks, friend!April 29, 2013 – 2:45 pm
Anita @ Losing Austin - Whatevs is my favorite word. I may be overusing it lately!
But since you used it too, I had to add a comment here though I’m headed over there to hear the rest of the story…April 29, 2013 – 1:25 pm
Stephanie Powell - That’s crazy. I have more a problem with being much younger than most moms in Lily’s class. Many don’t care and we get along great, but some seem to think that due to my age (I was almost 24 when she was born) I am somewhat incompetent as a mom.June 1, 2013 – 10:05 am
Julie Chenell DeNeen - I have to say, the Facebook plugin makes me want the theme myself. I love how it shows up on both blog and page. Sorta solves the problem of those dead-never-viewed Facebook pages that everyone is complaining about since Facebook changed its algorithim for displaying pages in the regular feed.April 18, 2013 – 1:34 pm
Rachel Demas - Your blog looks amazing, Kristi! Well done.April 18, 2013 – 7:54 pm
Kristi Rieger Campbell - True! But I’ll bet you could code yours to do the same thing. And I have to say that having you on here as an admin makes me wish you worked at Finding Ninee full time. April 18, 2013 – 9:27 pm
Finding Ninee - (OOH I just changed me to Finding Ninee page instead of me)
Also, it’s a little confusing who commented where. But I don’t suppose it matters. Pretty awesome. April 18, 2013 – 9:29 pm
Finding Ninee - Hi Meg,
You are SO right that people can be complete STUPID jerks. I can’t believe some woman said that to you about your sons. Why it’s so easy for some to judge others when they should really be looking at themselves is beyond me.
Thanks so much for the comment – can’t wait to check out your blog!April 18, 2013 – 9:31 pm
Finding Ninee - Yay for commenting in both places. And yeah, nobody ever disagrees with me when I say I’m old either. Sigh. One of the moms I speak to sometimes at Tucker’s school was born the year I graduated high school. No shit. April 18, 2013 – 9:33 pm
Finding Ninee - Thanks, Katia! And sadly, I didn’t tell off the redneck 🙁April 18, 2013 – 9:33 pm
Finding Ninee - YAY for older moms! Thanks for commenting! April 18, 2013 – 9:33 pm
Finding Ninee - I know. I wondered if I should leave that part out, actually. But in the end, I went the traffic-whore route and decided maybe it’d start a discussion. 😉April 18, 2013 – 9:34 pm
Kristi Rieger Campbell - Stephanie,
I wish that more moms would realize that what we have in common as mothers far outweighs the differences due to having our children at various ages. June 1, 2013 – 1:01 pm
Kristi - Thanks, Sara! I’m super psyched about it. Yay.April 18, 2013 – 5:23 pm
Kristi - Yay, I’m glad you like it. My favorite photo is the one Charlie took of Tucker in December at your house. Such joy. And the reason I now covet a $650 camera.April 18, 2013 – 5:26 pm
