Thankfully, war and its very concept is completely foreign to me. I have never lived in a country where I’ve had to question my basic rights as a woman. Or as a person. I live in a country, as do many of us, where we get to complain about taxes, about our government, and about our lives. We even get to complain about our boredom. Not everybody does. Some people are shot for expressing their opinions. Or for trying to go to school.
Today, on the day celebrated as Veterans Day in the US, I want to say thank you to all of our past and present servicemen and women. Whether you were drafted, had no other life choice, or signed up voluntarily, I thank you.
To my husband, who was in the US Army for 20 years and continues to serve us through the Department of Defense, I thank you. You’ve been to Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and were even in Germany when the wall came down. I cannot imagine what you’ve seen. As a woman who didn’t serve, and, more important to me now, as a mom, I thank you for making it that I didn’t have to see what you did. That I won’t.
Thank you, veterans.
