Coronavirus Apocalypse Music To Take You Away

Life is unrecognizable. Our kids are e-learning and we’re isolated but still go shopping for toilet paper because people who realized this epidemic panic (pandemic, anybody?) would be a thing early on decided toilet paper was the item to stock up on. There’s a lot more missing than just toilet paper, but toilet paper seems to be the thing everybody’s worried about. It’s overwhelming.

I mean come on. We’re hoarding toilet paper now?

Spring Break for us is next week, and I’d planned on writing my Finish the Sentence Friday post last week about how much we’re looking forward to Disneyland and California Universal Studios. Instead, I spent hours and tears canceling flights, hotels, and finding out how long we can use our pre-purchased tickets for, hoping for credits without penalties, and being on hold for longer than anybody should.

It Sucks But, Of Course, We Isolate

I know it’s the same everywhere, for everyone, and I get it. I do. Of course, we need to isolate ourselves as much as possible. Toe taps rather than hugs and high fives. It’s smart, and maybe we’ll manage to contain the spreading of this virus enough to not get to full apocalypse mode. It’s our job to protect the more vulnerable people in our world.

And yet. I’m grumpy and sad. Confused and angry. But also, healthy. Grateful, and fed, and with internet so that my son can participate in e-learning. It’s like I’m filled with all the feelings and can’t decide which one to feel first, or the most, or something.

All of this is a long way to say I never did write a post about spring break, even though I was looking forward to it. Tamara wrote one though, and it’s beautiful and heartbreaking, as her posts always are.

It’s Like The Zombie Apocalypse and WTF

So. It’s as if the zombie apocalypse my son has talked about for years is here, without the brain-eating night dwellers. And it’s stressful, scary, and OMG FRIENDS WHEN ARE WE SUPPOSED TO RE-SCHEDULE SPRING BREAK? Because will this be over in July? In October?

*end rant*

Time For Coronavirus Apocalypse Music To Take You Away

During this confusing and crazy time, there’s not much easy escape to be had. We can’t go to the gym. To restaurants. We shouldn’t see our parents or at-risk friends. Maybe not anybody at all, or so it seems.

But music. Music is always magical. It, like a scent caught in a breeze, has the ability to transport us to another moment, another life, another version of ourselves.

Music can make us laugh, drive faster, or cry. It’s universal and timeless. There are thousands of songs I love. They bring me back and forward and inward and outward.

Here are a few completely random songs that come to mind that take me away.

“Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me.” – Styx

Coronavirus Apocalypse Music To Take You Away

Memorized by Blake Stadnik. I’d never heard of him before but loved this scene in the show “This Is Us,” Shazammed it, and downloaded the song. I’m sharing the YouTube version from the show. The actual download ends up repeating at the end, but the first 2/3 takes me away. Tucker likes it too, which is important these days, especially when I’m with him in my Jeep 🙂

Obviously, everything pretty much all Metallica is a mood booster for me, but this video is priceless. My friend Julie tagged me on Facebook with it months ago, and it’s still my very favorite thing on the internet. I searched on YouTube and can’t find it, so hopefully, you’ll be able to see the video from the following link.

Like Metallica, I adore all songs by Nina Simone. One of her songs that totally takes me away is Go Limp. In this version, I’m transported to another time, where I can imagine being in the audience, and laughing with her as she laughs at the song. My favorite part is when she says “This is a funny song!”

I’m so glad I had the opportunity to see Simon and Garfunkle in concert before they were done touring (are they ever done-done?). I love how even though these singers I adored in my youth are old (even older than I am), they still sound the same. A few years ago, I discovered Disturbed’s version of Sound of Silence. I blast it. It takes me away and reminds me of singing it at summer camp, along with Puff the Magic Dragon

Just now, I asked Tucker what song takes him away. He said “You’re a Rock Star” by Smash Mouth. Which is actually called “All Star.” It’s not my favorite, but I think we need to listen to the youth of our homes and our hearts, and get carried away by what they love, too…

It’s especially important to ask the youth of our homes and our hearts what music speaks to them when today is the day they went from a gap-mouthed kid to one who will soon have straight teeth and in-mouth canines, or at least that’s the hope.
Also, hold me.

This has been a Finish the Sentence Friday post, with the prompt of “Songs that carry me away.” This week’s co-host is the famous Jen Kehl, who was the brain behind “Twisted Mixed Tape Tuesdays,” for those who remember it. She’s going to be sharing from her and her sister’s FB page, The Stereo Sisters. Drop links to your posts in the comments there, and below here!

  • Lydia - You get what you give
    Ocean man
    Aria from pagliacci
    Dancin in the moonlight
    Cool change

Stay calm my friend, love youMarch 20, 2020 – 5:16 amReplyCancel

    • Kristi Campbell - Aw, I love you. Also? I have to look up all of these other than Dancing in the Moonlight which is a GREAT choice.March 20, 2020 – 10:14 pmReplyCancel

  • Kenya - Tell Tucker I loved his song, it brightened my morning and it’s a keeper. Was it part of the American Pie Movies? It seemed to give a me flashback. Anyway I’ll find a playlist to add it to. Your first one made me teary eyed because I stopped watching This Is Us pretty much because I’m just too emotional and I don’t like to go there like that with television. A movie I can do because it’s one time. But anyway to hear the the song and see the updates such as Kate’s baby, I was like awwwww. Loved Nina! Of course I knew that one but after I got to that one I put my headphones in so I heard the lyrics better and I was giggling too. Disturbed was AWESOME!!!! My introduction to The Sound of Silence is from the movie The Graduate. Where it is played sooooo many times. I love it though. Here’s some trivia for you if you’re familiar with The Graduate – Benjamin’s dad is the voice of Knight Rider’s Kitt!March 20, 2020 – 7:58 amReplyCancel

    • Kristi Campbell - I’ll tell him 🙂 and he’ll super appreciate it. I have no idea if it was American Pie movies or not but I recognized it too. OMG to This is Us. I cry in every episode but can’t stop even though some of the characters are annoying to me. But Kate and the baby (he’s blind sorry for the spoiler) and him becoming a singer??? OMG. And well, anyway, no more spoilers if you decide to watch.
I learned Sound of Silence at summer camp, and only watched The Graduate once but holy wow about Knight Rider’s Kit! So cool!
And yeah, Nina is just amazing, and that song makes me giggle every time too. I wish I was old enough to have been there in person except of course I’m already older than I want to be… but still.March 20, 2020 – 10:18 pmReplyCancel

  • Mardra - Ah yes, this was a great line up! I didn;’t know the Nina song and now my life is better!
    Hahaha.
Music takes us away from the panic – Yea for that.
    Much love to you and yours <3 – MsMarch 22, 2020 – 1:40 pmReplyCancel

    • Kristi Campbell - OMG that Nina song makes ALL life better, I think. Here’s to the panic at least lessening. Huge love to you and yours, too, friend. xoMarch 22, 2020 – 9:52 pmReplyCancel

  • Tamara - It was definitely a timely topic, wasn’t it? I’m all about the music to take us away right now. I didn’t know that Nina song at all! Shame on me. Well now I have all the time in the world to know it!
    Hang in there. It WILL get better.March 23, 2020 – 1:24 pmReplyCancel

    • Kristi Campbell - That Nina song takes me away every single time. It’s one of my favorites of hers. OMG to hanging in there. I *know* it will get better but wowza. Same to you, mama. <3March 24, 2020 – 10:16 pmReplyCancel
