More than a Bed – it’s Sex, Sorrow, Sleep, and Snuggles

My bed is upstairs. Broken. Which breaks me a little. Feels stupid and first-world, but that’s where I am.

Angry because the people that moved it broke the footboard that never should’ve been disassembled in the first place.

This bed’s moved nine times now, and nobody’s ever taken it apart so completely.

The guy who was set to assemble it once it arrived?
“See here, Ma’m? They didn’t even loosen the screws.”

I know it’s just a bed. It’s just a bed. It’s just a bed, right?

Except a bed is never just a bed.

A bed is comfort.

It’s privacy and a family gathering place on a lazy morning and the place we read stories and play silly made-up games like Tucker’s and my “dog and person.” The dog is a hand with the thumb sticking out as a tail. Person is two fingers, petting dog and throwing it treats.

As he ages, Tucker thinks it’s funny when dog is naughty and pees on person. Or farts. This game would be too silly and pointless to play anywhere else but in bed. There though, it’s where five years ago and today merge into a carried on game. Nobody sees, except us.

Bed is where we burrow in sorrow. There, tears come and then fly, winged and released to dance in later dreams.

Bed is passion and privacy, and a place of snuggles and a family cuddled together for giggles and conversations that never seem to happen anywhere else.

It’s where we become brave enough to ask questions that nowhere else can hold safely. Like when I told Robert we shouldn’t continue on unless he was open to having a baby.

It’s Always More than a Bed – it’s Sex, Sorrow, Sleep, and Snuggles…

A bed is movies and giggles and blocking out the sun with pillow nests. It’s five more minutes of dreams.

Mine’s sometimes left unmade for days. Unless company’s coming.

It’s where I breastfed Tucker when he was in a bassinet a few feet away and it was easier to bring him to bed; lie half sleep while he fed.

It’s the bed I saw in a store 20 years ago that no longer exists. I visited it over and over. “I want that bed,” I said.
People told me it was impractical. “You’ll want a wooden bed when you’re older,” they said.

Except, I don’t. I want this bed.

It’s Always More than a Bed – its Sex, Sorrow, Sleep, and Snuggles…

Brushed stainless steel, maybe not-so-grownup, except I’m a grownup.

We’re not sleeping in it until it’s fixed. The movers left the headboard against the wall, and I’m afraid if any of us sleep there, the headboard will fall and break us. Break the love I have of this bed.

This has been a Finish the Sentence Friday post. This week, my co-host Kenya Johnson of Sporadically Yours and I are hosting a five-minute stream-of-consciousness with the prompt “My bed.”

PS (after the five minutes) – a company is coming out tomorrow to look at welding the broken footboard of my bed and assembling it for us. Although we haven’t yet heard from the US Government about fixing the damage they caused with this move, we have enough other broken stuff to claim, and based on how this whole move went, I’m not holding my breath. I really just want my bed fixed. Oh, and then you can bet I’ll go after damages for the other stuff they broke. 😉 Grrrrrr….

  • Lizzi - Lots of wonderful memories of your bed, for sure. The person and dog game made me laugh and remember a kinda game my sister and I invented (except we didn’t) when we were little and still sharing a room.

I hope your bed gets fixed really soon xxxJuly 20, 2018 – 2:10 amReplyCancel

    • Kristi Campbell - Aw. I wish you had had the dog and person game with your sister. Maybe it’s never too late. One morning… somewhere with somebody special. A child, a lover, you can try our person and dog game. It’s really special fun. And thank you. I hope my bed is fixed soon too…xxxJuly 21, 2018 – 12:22 amReplyCancel

  • Kenya G. Johnson - Nine moves! It should not have been broken. I can see how that’d be heartbreaking. We have a entertainment center that was custom make in Japan it was moved to the states just fine into an upstairs about. But when we bought a house and moved they broke it. It makes you feel so stuck like you can’t think about unpacking and fixing up the house because of the broken thing. It was fixed fairly quick as we were dealing with local movers and not the government. It’s only been moved again to come to NC from Florida and I can’t tell where the damage was. I just knew when it was repaired I was always going to be able to spot it but the repair was invisible. I wish i knew who did it, if they were still around I’d leave a google raving review. I hope that’s the case one your bed is fixed. I love that you’ve made your stainless steel bed work with your wooden furniture. It’s irreplaceable!July 20, 2018 – 6:50 amReplyCancel

    • Kristi Campbell - I agree. I have no idea why they’d have taken it apart now, after nobody ever needed to before. I blame trump and his stupid minions. Robert said that no moving expenses have been taxed before now either – now, because of jerkface, they’re taxed at 33% which I guess is the highest allowed. Anyway. I want to see your entertainment center. It’s so true that one piece of broken makes us wait for the whole settling in. Tucker and I have been sleeping in the basement, and Robert on the couch because he goes to work in the morning and Tucker’s too scared to sleep 2 floors up without us… UGH. I’m glad you got your piece repaired. A neighbor of mine (also a friend) said that she’d gotten a scratch on an antique and also could no longer see the damage. Fingers crossed. And thank you again! I like the mix of the wood and stainless steel but know I’m a little weird that way maybe. Or not. Who knows as we all like what we like and how much is because we thought something was cool when we were like 8 years old!July 21, 2018 – 12:33 amReplyCancel

  • Sarah Balding - To be honest, I had never seen a brushed stainless steel bedframe like that, but I think it’s beautiful. Of course, right now, I’d just like a bedframe period as our mattress and box springs are on the floor. 😛 I hope they are able to fix your bed soon.July 20, 2018 – 9:44 amReplyCancel

    • Kristi Campbell - Thank you for thinking it’s beautiful! I love it too. And yeah, I get you with the mattress and box spring on the floor. Been there, and it works. I mean really whatever works works, right? Plus, after reading your post, sounds like you’ve got this whole sleeping thing figured out (eventually) right 🙂 ? LOLJuly 21, 2018 – 12:35 amReplyCancel

  • My Inner Chick - I LOOOVE that bed! WOWWWWW.

    I love your writing…

How you can make a “BED” come alive like one of your characters!

    You are AMAZING. xxJuly 20, 2018 – 1:06 pmReplyCancel

    • Kristi Campbell - Thank you!! I love that bed too. You can’t even tell how perfect it is because the best part is covered with pillows in this photo. Anyway thank you!!! You are amazing. Adore you!!!July 21, 2018 – 12:37 amReplyCancel

  • Emily - I totally get why you love that bed — it’s super cool looking — and very pretty too! And, even though it’s “first world” as you say, it still matters and I really, really hope they can fix it to be just like it was before. We have had our bed for a really long time too and I never thought about it, but you’re right –a bed can hold a whole lotta history!July 20, 2018 – 7:18 pmReplyCancel

    • Kristi Campbell - Thanks, Emily. I love it. Nobody seems to get it here, anyway. I hope they can fix it too and appreciate you saying so. Here’s to history and the things we have that remind us of it. <3July 21, 2018 – 12:38 amReplyCancel

  • Pat B - How dare they break your bed. They needed to know your story and then maybe they would have treated it better—much better.

It is a shame that you have so many broken pieces of furniture from a single move.

Your comments about it being a family gathering place, reminded me of a time when the kids and I sprawled out on our bed and ended up in giggling fits as we saw each other’s faces in upside down positions.July 23, 2018 – 1:06 amReplyCancel

    • Kristi Campbell - I was really sad about the bed although I’m happy to report that I went ahead and hired a company to repair it, knowing I may not be reimbursed. It felt so unsettled with all the pieces piled up and the mattress on the floor. It is a shame how much they broke. I know it’s just stuff but it’s stuff we use… and to have to spend time cataloging and photographing all of the damage is something I resent a bit too. Moves are busy enough. Sigh. But, it’s just stuff. I have my people and giggles and that’s what matters. Love your memory of seeing each other’s faces upside down 🙂July 23, 2018 – 1:24 pmReplyCancel
