Snow, almost snow and moon boots

Once upon a time, long ago, there was a little girl named Kristi who grew up in Colorado.  Sometimes, it would snow. Sometimes, it would snow a lot.  Was school cancelled?  Very rarely.  One of the few times I remember celebrating snow days was due to such a huge blizzard that our driveway had six-foot kid-eating drifts in it. Look, here’s me:

SnowDrift

This is a post on snow, almost snow, and moon boots.

We usually just had school.  My mom would put newspaper bags over our socks, we’d slip on our moonboots and carry our regular shoes to school in our backpacks.  The plastic newspaper bags ensured that our feet stayed dry.  It never even occurred to us to complain.  It was fun – an adventure!

Speaking of moonboots, who remembers these bad boys??  Oh yeah, baby!

January 2013: Why am I telling you about this?  Because here, in Virginia, school was let out two hours early Friday.  For this.
SnowDay!

See?  The grass shows through the snow.

January 2014: We’re on day three now of school being cancelled. And this is hard, friends.

And also because I want to show you one of my favorite things about bundling up to play in the snow:  Tucker’s completely awesome hat hair!

  • Emily - I’m with you on these wimpy snow days…they cancel school here sometimes just based on the forecast…ridiculous! And love Tucker’s hat head — so cute!! Oh and BTW, I ALREADY voted for you even before I saw this post. I too am on that list (I think I’m at like #70 on the other list…so sad). Anyway, as I was voting for myself (another pathetic gesture), I was perusing the “pending” blogs, saw yours and voted. I know I won’t get near the top 25 either, but it’s fun to dream….January 27, 2013 – 7:00 pmReplyCancel

    • admin - Emily, that’s exactly what happened Friday. It hadn’t even begun to snow and they let school out 2 hours early. Because Tucker had a field trip until noon anyway, that meant that he was home all afternoon. Fun, yes, but he also has no school tomorrow or Tuesday and let’s face it. Momma needs time to blog and stuff. Sigh.

Thanks huge for the vote. Part of me thinks I should just withdraw, especially when I see some of the “big” blogs up there who I know have millions of subscribers. How’s a blog like mine gonna compete with that? Ugh. I’m going to vote for you RIGHT NOW and actually, #70’s a lot better than where I am, so, YAY, you!January 27, 2013 – 7:10 pmReplyCancel

      • admin - Just voted! You know, I wish there were contests that were actually based on bloggers voting on each other’s content. So, basically, each of us can enter maybe three of our favorite posts and only the people who enter can vote for their favorite three posts (not their own). Now that would be a contest I could get more behind. This begging for clicks thing is just kind of sad.January 27, 2013 – 7:12 pmReplyCancel

  • Josie Bisett - Kristi! Good luck on this circle of moms Top 25 campaign, I will go in and vote for you whenever I can! I remember walking to school in the snow wearing a stupid short skirt, no tights, silly girly shoes, no boots, then skidding on my arse down an icy slope and getting freezer burn on my butt and thighs. Brrrrrr and agggghhhh! It made a lot of kids laugh though. I’m okay with that. Okay I’m not. Jerks 😉January 27, 2013 – 11:05 pmReplyCancel

    • admin - Ah Josie! Thanks so much for the luck. I don’t really have a snowball’s chance in hell, but whatever. And dude! I can imagine you in all your glory wearing your cute skirt, girly shoes and sliding down the hill! I’ll bet they were only laughing because they were so jealous! Seriously. <3January 27, 2013 – 11:17 pmReplyCancel

  • Seriously Kate - I love the animation of your hands screaming for mom under 6 feet of snow! 🙂 Yes, it amazes me what school will let out for. Our county schools didn’t even go because the snow was scheduled to start mid morning! Ha!

    • admin - Seriously, Kate, (ha! bet I’m the fist with that one huh!), thanks for recognizing my poor little self. And hello! What’s WRONG with these schools???
      UGH.January 27, 2013 – 11:40 pmReplyCancel

  • Joy - Of course I immediately voted for you! xoxo
Oh yeah, and the snow thing… getting snow days off is not common here. This winter it was only one day when I got a call in the morning that school would be cancelled because the streets were so icy that that buses couldn’t drive.January 28, 2013 – 2:43 amReplyCancel

    • admin - Thank you, Joy!
Snow days shouldn’t be common – it’s crazy! Here, they seriously cancel if they think it might become icy or whatever…I think maybe because the traffic is already so bad? Anyway – it sucks!January 28, 2013 – 7:55 amReplyCancel

  • K - Voted for you! 🙂 Tucker’s hat hair is amazing, by the way.January 28, 2013 – 3:39 pmReplyCancel

    • admin - Thanks so much! I appreciate the vote (every day – I know…I’m shameless) and you recognizing that hat hair can be amazing 😉January 28, 2013 – 5:50 pmReplyCancel

  • Alana Terry - Just voted! And congrats on your Top Mommy Blogs jump, by the way! (I won’t hold it against you, wink wink!)January 28, 2013 – 4:15 pmReplyCancel

    • admin - Aw, thanks HUGE. And the Top Mommy Blogs jump was a shock. I’m sure you’ll be ahead again next month 🙂January 28, 2013 – 5:49 pmReplyCancel

  • Jennifer - Haha I love the drawing of little girl you fallen in the snow. So cute!January 28, 2013 – 9:03 pmReplyCancel

  • Rachel - I voted for you a few times. Did you know I’m from Kansas? Yes, we were neighbors! Not surprised we have something else (sort of) in common! 🙂 Can totally relate to having to get to school in blizzards. We were a hearty sort, no? And, again, I LOVE the pictures. They crack me up. Let me know if you ever get sick of hearing me say that…January 28, 2013 – 9:20 pmReplyCancel

    • admin - Rachel, I had no idea you were from Kansas, and we were totally neighbors! How cool! And YES, we were a very hearty sort, unlike the wimpy kids (mine) who have no idea what it is to trudge through the drifts looking for fun because mom said it was time to go outside.
And thank you for the votes! I’ll never get close. I think these contests are stupid, because people like us little fries never have a shot. And yet, I’m strangely compelled to try and join and … UGH.

And I will NEVER tire of reading that you love the pictures. Ever, ever. In fact, it makes me feel like it’s worth it (the pictures take me way longer than the writing does for whatever reason). And thinking of something to say? Well. For me, that takes the longest of all. YOU ARE AWESOME.January 28, 2013 – 9:54 pmReplyCancel

  • Sara - Ha! Good post! That hat hair is classic, he’s a little Heat Miser!
As for wimpy schools, why aren’t the offices as wimpy? We get an inch of snow and I’m like “ooooooo, they should close the office!!” –not b/c I can’t drive in it but b/c it’s such a great day to curl up on the couch with a blanket and a book or movie. Honestly, it’s like these corporate types not only don’t have hearts, they don’t have SOULS.
    Word.January 29, 2013 – 11:38 amReplyCancel

    • admin - Sara, I know, right? It’s so different when WE want a day off and they pretty much never close the office. Ever. Even when they do? “Work from home if you must” because they gotta suck us as dry as possible. Huh. Soulless.January 29, 2013 – 6:12 pmReplyCancel

  • Stephanie @ Mommy, for real. - Well, I for one am voting for you every day; though I share your opinion on the legitimacy of this contest and I wrote you back on the comment you left on my post yesterday. I feel the same way as you do though- desperate for votes! Of course I can’t get up to even 50, but that whole “Blogs to watch” category made me hopeful! Duh.

Second, that is HILARIOUS that you barely got any snow and school was cancelled. Second, due to my freakishly narrow feet, I could never wear any cute boots like the other girls, so I was stuck wearing boy moon boots all the time, and I was really self-conscious. To make me feel better, my mom “decorated” them with those non-stick bathtub appliques! Snort! Then they all fell off in the snow… Great pictures!January 29, 2013 – 2:06 pmReplyCancel

    • admin - Thanks, Stephanie. I’ll do the same. Who knows, maybe we’ll get lucky and some editor people will actually dive into our blogs, find the best stuff and tell the world that we should be watched!
And ya, school cancels for pretty much everything here. I’ve heard of them having a 2-hour delay because it’s cold. Seriously. Because it’s cold.
And AW to your sweet mom who decorated your ugly boy moon boots with bathtub appliqués! AWESOME 🙂January 29, 2013 – 6:15 pmReplyCancel

  • clark - hello, ‘admin’? put on Kristi!

    (ha)
    (ha)

    excellent hat hair!
(place various ‘gang’ signs and maybe some ink into photos)

hey you know that stereotypical (and therefore probably not accurate) gang signs. arms crossed downward random fingers showing… I like to make up similar gestures when I stand in front of the teenager at the gas station, paying for my gas.

    (cognitive dissonance yo)January 23, 2014 – 2:34 pmReplyCancel

    • Kristi Campbell - He SO needs the gang signs! And yeah, published back when I was still really dumb about how to do this blog stuff. I mean I’m still really dumb but now at least can get my name to show up.January 23, 2014 – 5:41 pmReplyCancel

  • Joy @ i can say mama - Aww how I love hat hair! <3 Sunny has the most adorable hat hair, too!

I miss not being able to be around as often as I used to be…. the last weeks were just crazy but who am I telling that… I always wonder how you manage to keep up with blogging, commenting, following while working and taking care of Tucker.

    Mwah, my dear sister!January 24, 2014 – 4:39 amReplyCancel
