My father’s father was an engineer and an inventor. He made, and lost, millions of dollars during his lifetime through a variety of business ventures. ย I remember my dad and I having a conversation when I was about 13 years old about what I wanted to be when I grew up. Back then, I wanted […]

  • Janine Huldie - Amy Winehouse seriously was awesome (damn shame what she did to herself) and loved that you included the birth of Tucker. That picture was so adorable and you already know that I had Emma right around the same time, so the decade ended on the right foot for us, too!! ๐Ÿ™‚August 6, 2013 – 11:48 amReplyCancel

  • Linda Roy - That’s exactly it Kristi – you nailed it. It was like everything had already been invented. (Except for the dreaded auto tune of course and that was invented in the 80s just in time ot save Madonna but now is being used perversely IMHO). I love your picks and the pic of Tucker as a little smugglet is adorable.August 6, 2013 – 12:18 pmReplyCancel

  • Kerri - Everything has been invented…except when we are in the nursing home we will be telling Tucker and Boo to stop giving us the finger when we explain that in our day we had to carry a phone in our hand and dial it ourselves.August 6, 2013 – 12:26 pmReplyCancel

  • clark - Godsmack! is there even a bad track anywhere (on their first ‘record’)!

loved the photo of Tucker (do I need to make reference to the distance that the seed of certain deciduous trees manage to jump to?)

(hey at least you have a rational rationale behind your choices and sequence of songs…I’m beginning to hear feedback on my juxtaposition of gospel music…country rock and Avenged Sevenfold…lol)

    I enjoy reading your Posts.

    lolAugust 6, 2013 – 12:28 pmReplyCancel

  • Considerer - Bless Tucker’s little grumpy face (have you seen the latest viral vid going round? The ‘Bitchy Resting Face’ – there has to be a baby equiv for that pic! Adorbs) And, THANKS for the earworm – hilarious coupling that with painted airplanes (I prefer the song in Hungarian though, for shits and giggles)

First brush with the Avett Brothers, and am LOVING this song. It’s awesome.

(and P.S. – ya don’t gotta invent stuff to count, ya gotta inspire – and you do that by the truckload)August 6, 2013 – 12:29 pmReplyCancel

  • Quick Stepp- Melissa - Avett Brothers! Great googly moogly are they freaking amazing! If you ever get the chance to see them live GO! Do not hesitate, just GO! So, so good. My fave of theirs is The Greatest Sum (acoustic). Such an awesome love song.August 6, 2013 – 12:54 pmReplyCancel

  • Kevin Dickson - Speaking of inventions, didn’t you do the early market research for my “personal grooming device”? You interviewed people on the street and got their opinions, and even helped find the right name.

Did you know that it is now the largest selling device of it’s kind? BTW I sold the royalty so I could get Carla a nice engagement ring. D’oh!August 6, 2013 – 12:55 pmReplyCancel

  • Dana - I lasted for one second of that airplane song – how do you listen to that crap? Ever notice how so many of today’s songs have snippets of old songs in them? Because most of the good stuff has already been written.August 6, 2013 – 1:12 pmReplyCancel

  • K - I love that about the world…just when we think that everything that we could ever conceive of has already been invented, something else is created, and suddenly we wonder how we ever lived life without that in our lives…

I feel that way about Banana Nutella cupcakes…I was out with friends the other day, and just when I thought I had already discovered my favorite foods, I tried a Banana Nutella cupcake. I don’t know how I functioned before these cupcakes entered my life.

P.S. That picture of Tucker is priceless! OMG he is too cute. And I love his little sneaker slippers!August 6, 2013 – 1:26 pmReplyCancel

  • Darla @ Moms World - OMG! We’re practically musical soulmates! I love all of the songs you chose! How exciting!! And OMG your son is adorable and OMG I love your blog. OMG OMG OMG! HAHAHAAugust 6, 2013 – 2:15 pmReplyCancel

  • Kate - Earworm- never heard that term before but it is perfect for those songs. Love it!August 6, 2013 – 2:51 pmReplyCancel

  • Deb @ Urban Moo Cow - I had Amy Winehouse on my list, too! Loved her. So sad she effed herself up so much.

And that photo of Tucker is sooooooooooooooooooooo cute. You can see his little boy face waiting to come out. ๐Ÿ™‚August 6, 2013 – 4:18 pmReplyCancel

  • Kenya G. Johnson - Oh geez. Why did I click on the airplane one? You set me up! I guess that was paypack for me tweeting you the video. LOL! Love Tucker’s bald head. And the sentence following you and Steve Jobs. LOL!! I got my husband to upgrade to iPhone 5 last week. I didn’t tell him how soon iPhone 6 would be out. I want us to be stuck with the same phone at the same time. Isn’t that mean? LOL! LOVE my iPhone though ๐Ÿ˜‰ 12 1/2 years is hard to narrow down what I really love. I just checked, top played in my iTunes library is Forget You by Cee Lo Green. What?! Well it is fun to listen to. You gotta check out the lyrics. And if I’m not mistaken the explicit version has the real f-word in it. I bought radio version. P.S. This is a song on my workout playlist.August 6, 2013 – 5:53 pmReplyCancel

  • JenKehl - what the heck did you do to my name LOL! It’s like I’ve stepped into a parallel universe! First of all, I dated the TWIN of one of the Avett Bros, so much so that I could not stop staring or even concentrate on the music. Because he BROKE my heart that ass!
Also, Amy Winehouse. Idiot. I can’t put her music in a mix because I refuse to support her idiotic decisions. That’s my opinion of course. But having two friends die from heroin overdoses who were both GENIUSES, well. She should have GONE TO REHAB LIKE HER SONG SAID! Sorry, I’m yelling.
Did I tell you how much I like this post? How true about everything being invented already. That is how I felt too, and then I found something and loved it!
Also, totally showing Isaiah the painted planes! I’ll let you know what he thinks!August 6, 2013 – 7:39 pmReplyCancel

  • Kristi Campbell - Janine,
It really is sad about Amy Winehouse. Really really sad. Sigh.

    Linda,
The word smuglett is my new favorite.

    Kerri,
HAHA to Tucker and Boo giving us the finger when we’re in our nursing home! Ha! I love it!

    Clark,
You called me rational. You’re my new favorite.

  • Kristi Campbell - Considerer, (and Clark)
Aw! You’re the sweetest. Never mind, Clark. Lizzi is my favorite now. Her comment was way better. Plus, I’m still trying to figure out what deciduous trees have to do with anything. Do please tell. Oh and I’m so glad you’re loving the Avett Brothers. That’s one of my alltime favorite songs. Ever.

    Quick Step,
Yes, I will see them (I hope). An IRL friend got to see them this past year at Red Rocks. I’ll bet that was amazing.

    Kevin,
Are you serious that that nose hair clipper is the best-selling in the market and you sold the royalties? OMG. And hey – confused. I thought that Mark’s dad’s company owned it?? That market research might have been an even shittier job than driving drunk people around at 2am for Dan Dan (which was actually fun in a way except when he wanted me to drive a wedding the next day at 9am).

    Dana,
You have to persevere and keep listening. Pretty soon, you’ll love it. Maybe.

    K,
Banana Nutella cupcakes??? I have not lived yet. Must. Find. Some. And thanks, I loved those little slippers too. He had them in a bunch of colors.

  • Kristi Campbell - Darla,
OMG OMG OMG. you are adorable.

    Kate,
Earworm is perfect. Can’t remember where I heard it first but even the word itself is, in fact, an earworm.

    Deb,
I love Amy. Too bad she never cleaned up her act. Sigh.

    Kenya,
HAHA that you didn’t tell your husband that iPhone 6 is coming. I am the same exact way and think it’s hilarious that we both don’t want ours to be ahead of us when it comes to their phone version. And yeah, total payback – I can’t believe you clicked on it, either! HA. I don’t know that song Forget You. I’ll have to check it out!

  • Dream - Awesome list! I don’t really appreciate Amy Winehouse the way some people do, but I do love some particular songs like the one you listed. Its kinda a whole retro-ish (not really sure what to call it) genre with others like Caro Emerald, Gin Wigmore, and Clary Browne & the Banging Rackettes that I’ve been getting into.August 6, 2013 – 8:45 pmReplyCancel

  • Lance - I miss Amy Winehouse. She’s truly one of a kind and in about 10 years we’ll be talking about her like we do Janis Joplin.

Clarence Darrow – Attorney For The Damned….that’s just great. You wanna cowrite the screenplay or television show treatment for that rejection letter? It’s too good to work.August 6, 2013 – 10:31 pmReplyCancel

Isn’t that funny when we get in that mindset that everything is as advanced as we think it’s going to be and it can’t get any better than that? I was just thinking how nice it would have been to have Pinterest when my son was little! My how things have changed in the last few years.

I also love me some Godsmack! I didn’t include any on any of my mixtapes-I know the thought went through my mind. Interestingly enough though,my favorite Godsmack CD has to be The Other Side, which isn’t even listed in their discography on some sites. Have you heard of it? Acoustic versions of several of their hits. LOVE IT.August 7, 2013 – 10:03 pmReplyCancel

  • clark - man! When the revolution comes, I really hope they leave the internet on!

that business Friday was so very not fun.

I’m sitting at my desk, looking out the window of my ‘office’* and it is looking like ‘not Summer’.
There is a certain degree of blueness to the sky that has me, against my will, flashing back to new shirts…the ‘first day of school shirt’, with the tissue paper and secret pins and that..’smell’ of new shirt.

Totally with you on Number 6.

I read with no small degree of envy the Posts that have lists and clear explanations of the gratitude item. Somehow, when I read them, I manage to balance envy with ambition and try to learn to write better and all…but in the meantime, I am glad that the TToT is different, in that anything goes.. so I get to do things like my grid.
(I always think of a great quote from Jack White on his approach to writing music, “I just find a guitar and pick a fight with it”.)

I'm very glad the internet breaking was a very temporary scenario! It sounded like many of the natives were becoming incredibly restless and I wouldn't have been surprised if rioting sparked and spread through the streets had it lasted any longer than it had!

Our spouses will go crazy with that one! ๐Ÿ™‚ I tend to remember the affect that cod liver oil would have on the human body once it was forced down through numerous gag reflexes. • Cyndi - HAHAH. Your post absolutely CRACKED ME UP.
Where do I start? The musical magpies thing is already favorited in my browser. OMG – I have zillions of CDs collecting dust and bunnies of every shape and size and need to upload them to an iPod that I want at some point in the future. I can put them on my computer, yes, but…you know…iPods are cool. HAHA
I’m seriously envious of those bookshelves because well, I have books stacked in all nookies and crannies of my house and cleaning the dust (yeah, I know…it’s like once every 2 years…but I don’t have time nor the inclination to clean when there’s a life to live, lol) and putting them all in one place would make one apt to have to dust less. Plus it just looks good.
As for your son, I’m sorry you, um, had to sacrifice a finger for the cause.
I’ve been practicing my Spanish (as you read in my post – thank you, lol) and I swear EVERYBODY in that show drinks tequila. So now, I’m going to go out and get some and follow it up with limes. That’s what they do in the show. It probably won’t taste good – I’m a wine drinker myself – but, I am inclined to try. LOL

See, I’m familiar with Oakton. Before moving to FL in 2003, I lived not more than a hop, skip and jump from there. Cross over Rt. 50 (other side of the tracks? lol)and you’ll find a little old neighborhood that goes by the name of Greenbriar. We lived there for many a year. Small world as they say:)

I came here first (but not before I published my Post) because of the amazing semi-synchronicity that I often see between your treatment of a theme and my own, which can be fun in an alternately disturbing and ego-pumping sort of way.

I originally wrote a Comment that consisted of maybe 5 words, ‘I enjoyed reading your Post’. While it is a true statement, I did not ‘scan’ (I think that is a literary term of some sort).

I read this (your) Post as ‘the expression of a clark as reflected by another’. Translation: we feel we can (and should be) more than we think we are, but we immediately recognize, in the love of another, the part of ourselves that we hope is there.

This is not to say Tucker is simply validation or proof of what you would be, far from out. He is, in a sense, from a certain perspective the objective manifestation of what you know is within yourself. You can see it in how he looks at you… how he ‘regards’ you.

In looking at this Post and my Post I see a similar sense of the desire to know that you have accounted for yourself (and by extension Tucker and the rest of the family) as well as anyone could hope.
I think I am saying something similar, but more from the perspective of not seeing the objective manifestation of making the most of life.

    I enjoyed reading your Post.August 2, 2013 – 8:59 pmReplyCancel

  • Deb @ Urban Moo Cow - You, with the always making me blubber and sniffle at my computer!! Meeting my grandchildren… I mean, yeah, that has to be on the bucket list.

The answer to your first question, though, the 5 hours one? Write, run and nap.

  • Lisa @ The Golden spoons - Kristo, this is absolutely beautiful! I just don’t know what else there is ti say!August 2, 2013 – 9:08 pmReplyCancel

  • Sarah | LeftBrainBuddha - Now I know what crashed the Internet today ~ the awesome power of all these amazing posts about what we want to do with our one single life. This is fantastic, Kristi, just absolutely amazing. I hope you do write that book because it will be touching and inspiring, just like this post. Wowzers.

{And I love grandma in her Metallica shirt. And also, in my ‘research,’ seeing the Northern lights and scuba diving were also in the top 20. It’s made reading these posts so interesting!}August 2, 2013 – 9:09 pmReplyCancel

  • Elizabeth @ Rocks, No Salt Mommy - Fabulous, indeed Kristi. You have opened my eyes to the world of children with developmental delays. I’ve always struggled with the idea of having a child with a developmental delay. Before I was even a mom, I was scared that my children wouldn’t be “perfect.” But through my experiences as a teacher and reading your blog {and a lot of growing up}, I realize that there is no “perfect.” Each child is “perfect” for who he is and why he is in this world. I love your honesty and your openness – you’re not afraid to sugar coat the tough stuff, but you’re also open to showing the wonderful, positive side of your life with Tucker. I love, love, love all your posts, but this one in particular. It shows your hopefulness, your expectations, and your plans for Tucker’s future. And not to mention, it made me both laugh and tear up. The folding up the map detail was a perfect addition!August 2, 2013 – 9:15 pmReplyCancel

  • Dana - Perfect. I don’t really think about a bucket list, but now I want exactly what you drew and said as the only thing on it. Except I’ll be wearing a Wicked t-shirt instead, and my grandchildren will most likely be brunettes. Did I mention this was perfect?August 2, 2013 – 9:39 pmReplyCancel

  • Rachel - You must write that book. If this post is even a glimpse of what will be in that book, you must write that book!August 2, 2013 – 11:33 pmReplyCancel

  • Stephanie @ Mommy, for Real. - OK, how is is possible that you can bring tears to my eyes and then make me laugh at the same time with your Metallica T-shirt? It’s a gift, friend. Thanks for that- an absolutely beautiful post.August 2, 2013 – 11:43 pmReplyCancel

  • K - I say this every time, Kristi, but this is so beautiful. PLEASE write a book…I would read it in a heartbeat! And Tucker has already changed the world for me.

I love your bucket list. (and you’ve managed to move me to tears again)

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, as always.August 3, 2013 – 12:17 amReplyCancel

  • karen - *sobbing and wiping my tears* I can’t stop crying woman…that is such an amazing and sweet post. I want that too…wow…I can’t even focus through the tears. Sometimes I feel selfish for wanting grandchildren…I know my parents waited and waited for me to have Dino…I hope I get to see him as a dad… *sniffles*August 3, 2013 – 6:44 amReplyCancel

  • Shay - Kristi…this post simply took my breath away. I had tears in my eyes at the scene that you illustrated, and I also got a good little chuckle in there with your choice of shirt. Seriously, Kristi…this was just awesome.

On my bucket list? I don’t want to sound like one of THOSE annoying people, but I really make sure to live life to the fullest and cross off bucket list things as much as I can daily. What I would love to do is focus not so much on myself, but on others. I don’t think I help people enough, and there is so much helping that can be done!

    Thanks again for a great post.August 3, 2013 – 10:09 amReplyCancel

  • Tamara - Alaska is pretty much my biggest, but I never considered winter before. I’ve been more interested in the height of summer and the eternal sunshine, and the moose and whales. Northern lights is also high up on my list. And I’d like to write a book, and see the kids grow and..so many things.August 3, 2013 – 8:34 pmReplyCancel

  • Maggie Amada - Oh, Kristi, this was simply beautiful and filled with the hopes and dreams for a mother and her child. With a mom like you to guide him, I am pretty sure he will make the world a better place.August 3, 2013 – 10:22 pmReplyCancel

    Lori,
Paper maps. Right? They’ll likely be worth a fortune on eBay someday…

Dude. So much better. And yes. I enjoyed reading yours as well, my friend.

  • Kristi Campbell - Sarah,
Your comment might just be my favorite one ever, in the history of time. Thank you, friend. And (sidenote) the whole internet breaking was bloody well weird, right?????? UGH.
Also, I did a much-needed back-up so maybe that was a good thing?

    Elizabeth,
I had an amnio because I did not want a “different” baby. I totally get what you’re saying…I should IM you separately about it. I did not realize that every child is perfect until I had my own imperfect perfect one. I think it’s the way I always knew it would be…which is likely why I was so afraid of it (and you may have just given me a post about it).

    Dana,

I am totally with you on the advocacy. When people who work at Walmart make more than the people who work with our children, well there is just something wrong with that (no offense to Walmart employees).

  • Considerer - Joy, this is stunningly beautiful. I love the analogy of the car journey. It’s so saddening to hear the opposition and judgement you’ve come up against, but SO heartwarming to hear about that young lady and her generous gift and the way Sunny touched her heart.

You guys are so wonderful, and you’re such a special Mama to Sunny and I am so pleased to call you my friend. You are truly an inspiration and I’m THRILLED that you’re part of Our Land.

  • Janine Huldie - Joy, your words were just so beautiful and lovely. I can tell just how much you love your Sunny and I am truly so happy to have gotten to know you through blogging. Thank you for sharing this here and please do hold onto the good, because there are really some wonderful people still out there and for the ones that aren’t you never going to change them and they truly aren’t worth your time or energy. I have learned this myself with some many different situations over the years and as much as it hurts us, we are stronger and better people then they ever could be!July 31, 2013 – 1:27 pmReplyCancel

  • Stephanie @ Life, Unexpectedly - I just love this post. Thanks a lot for sharing, Joy, and thank you for providing the patform, Kristi! People can be horrible sometimes, and I wonder if they even notice.

I remember when Lily was just born, that little child that I had wanted so badly and loved more than my own life. I was just your normal happy young mother out and about with her baby, sitting at a cafe and enjoying a coffee while looking at my baby when an old lady came over to look at her, telling her how cute she was. Then she turned to me with the coldest eyes ever, taxing me, and announced that I was at least young enough to have a couple of boys soon. THANK YOU, lady!!! And that was only the first time I was criticized, belittled, or felt sorry for by other people, just because I have girls.

    Don’t let it get to you, Joy.. Ever!July 31, 2013 – 4:40 pmReplyCancel

  • Deb @ Urban Moo Cow - Oh my goodness, this made me cry. That random kindness of strangers makes me cry way more than the random inconsideration. Sometimes I cry because I think the mean people are right, that I don’t deserve the kindness. I’m so glad you know that you and Sunny do.July 31, 2013 – 10:53 pmReplyCancel

  • Jen - You put this so beautifully Joy! Thank you! I still have problems with my 7yo because he has persistent auditory sensory processing disorder. So he is pretty much always the loudest person anywhere we are. Of course people stare, and talk behind there hands. Sometimes I feel self-conscious and ask him repeatedly to try and lower his voice. Sometimes I know that we are somewhere it doesn’t matter and just look straight ahead and smile at my sweet bright boy. Shame on them for making assumptions. • Rachel - As a teacher of students with special needs, I have seen so much prejudice and judgment that, unfortunately, it no longer surprises me. It continues to make my heart hurt, though. It did when I read this post. What amazes me is how people’s reactions are so much more a reflection on them than children. I’m glad you are able to see the beauty too. The company I worked for wanted me to transfer to their NYC office downtown literally the street from the Twin Towers. I would have had to take the subway and get out at in the Twin Towers itself. • GirlieOnTheEdge - You just lu-u-uv playing with emotions dontcha Kristi? LOL
Nice progression. Found myself a little contemplative, a little commiserative (it’s a word right? =D)
Then you made me laugh with the cartoons. Soon I was simultaneously in awe and jealous of your island adventures! The idea of living in a such a place speaks to the “romantic” side of me….just don’t know if I could do it. Mighty cool for to say you almost did:) Loved the pictures. And I think the town I live in is tiny!
I’m saving a big THANKS ALOT for ending with the Breathe vid.
I only watched the show every now and then. Now I just may have to start watching it beginning to end. Damn.

  • Rachel - I was terrified of Y2K! How stupid is that? I actually probably could have done this TMTT with a few stories of my own about Y2K. Why didn’t I think of that? However, i actually can straight up tell you that I don’t even know what music was written in the….um, what the hell are the 00’s called…something like auts or something like that. • Stephanie @ Mommy, for Real. - Holy crap, I love the Blower’s Daughter! I loved the whole album, but that and Eskimo Friend were my favorites. And I still love Breathe Me, and Sia in general. And your trip made me drool. BUT, most importantly- I have missed you! I’ve missed reading your voice! And here’s my Y2K story- on the New Year’s Eve of the Millennium, I was having the most explosive, dramatic breakup with someone I was crazy in love with. For real. I woke up in our hotel room the next morning, saw that the table had been overturned (presumably by me) and asked, “Did we break up?” Worst Millennium Ever. xoxoJuly 30, 2013 – 11:01 pmReplyCancel

  • Jennifer - Isn’t it funny how hard we are on ourselves when we are young? I actually feel much more confident and beautiful now as a 30 something woman (who is, incidentally about 30 pounds heavier) than I EVER did before having children. I look back at skinny, young, tan me and think…oh my gosh, those aren’t saddlebags!

I didn’t watch 6 feet under, but I will now if it is available on netflix or through my library. I have found some good music through the show BONES…which is still on but winding down in the next season, I think.

Enjoyed your post, as always! Thanks for co-hosting!July 30, 2013 – 11:12 pmReplyCancel

  • Tatum - Oh, I remember Y2K alright. Feeling like a complete dweeb (I used that word for you, Kristi) because I was a grown, almost, 23 year-old and my mom had to drive from Mpls to my pint sized apt in Milwaukee because she knew I was sick when I hadn’t yet figured it out…well, I knew I was sick, but I didn’t realize I was going to spend NYE on hospital given narcotics instead of the other festivities I had in mind. Pneumonia…kicked that smoking habit to the curb, so I guess I have that part to thank.

More importantly – what happened to Maroon Five? I still want to sleep with Adam Levine, but his music was way better in the early century.July 31, 2013 – 12:41 amReplyCancel

Honestly wish I was ahead of the game and had delved into computer programming of some sort prior to that, so I could have made bank…

I’d never heard of those locations you vacationed too, but you really must have loved them, considering you visited multiple times and contemplated working there. I’m uncertain if I could handle diving ๐Ÿ™ especially if there is a chance of sharks being in the area!

Ha! I love Disturbed! I saw them live and the lead singer busted out of a huge crate and began singing that song. It was pretty sweet! I also love The Red by Chevelle!

  • Rachel - Why’d you have to go and get Rich’s poor wife involved? What did she ever do to deserve being involved in you and Rich Rumple’s shenanigans? ๐Ÿ™‚ Headed over there…July 27, 2013 – 8:43 amReplyCancel

  • Kristi Campbell - Stephanie,
Thank you for appreciating our weird brands of humor!

    Considerer,
I’ll have to clear the whole tampon accident thing up for you privately. This blog has class, after all. Something for you to look forward to in a dozen years!

    Clark,
Thank you sir. You can introduce different voices here any time you like. Awesome imagery with the guitar player in the band that follows Jimi! I hear trumpet music!

    Janine,
HA. Hope you like it! It’s a little different from some of my lists!

    Rachel,
Rich wrote a post saying that his wife’s hot flashes help her memory saying that he doesn’t experience the same benefit. So I thought we’d be nice and help him to find a way to emulate the feeling – a steam cleaner would likely work!
