Torture

These are Tucker’s nail clippers.  Tiny and barely sharp enough to do their job.  Sort of innocent looking.

Because I suck and cut his finger when he was five months old, they are evil.  The kind of evil that makes him bleed.  The nail clippers that made us both cry were orange.  I’d hoped that the trauma I caused would be associated with them alone and so I switched to white ones.  Because white is less menacing than orange.

Tucker was not fooled by a color change.  I scarred him for life.

This is how I think Tucker sees nail clippers.  With talons, a forked tongue, mean scales and gnashing big teeth.

When Tucker’s nails are long enough to gather dirt, food, and day-old boogers underneath them, I try to remedy the situation by, you know, cutting them.  He’s not having it.

I approach.  At first, he is like “I have no hands.”

Then he gets mad and shoots laser beams at me with his eyes.

Then, he gets worried.

When I continue to approach, he resorts to tears, hoping to get some sympathy from me.

And some more…

So I start begging.

And I wait.

And wait some more because I have the patience of a superhero.

He starts to realize that he’s gonna lose because I’m bigger.

And eventually allows me to approach.

Usually, I manage to do the rest. Sometimes the next day.

When we reach this point, I’m sweating.  Maybe stinky.

We’re finally done.  And suddenly, it’s like the last hour never happened.

  • Joy - Awww, poor Tucker! 🙁 I use small nail scissors for Sunny’s nails but I guess that would not make any difference to Tucker, would it?December 8, 2012 – 3:04 pmReplyCancel

    • admin - I wish! Scissors just scare him more! Silly little guy!December 8, 2012 – 3:05 pmReplyCancel

  • Courtney - I can completely relate to this! My husband has to do it because he is patient and kind, while no matter what I do, I draw blood. I love your drawings 🙂December 8, 2012 – 8:57 pmReplyCancel

    • admin - Courtney, your husband ROCKS. Mine is patient and kind in some ways, but when it comes to this stuff, it’s “mommy’s” job. It freaks me out because if I die first, Tucker’s going to have long, dirty nails and unwashed hair. 😉December 8, 2012 – 10:48 pmReplyCancel

  • mdbc77 - not sure if this will help, but i let patty play in the sink when it’s time to cut her nails. plus, i can stand behind her so it’s very similar to cutting your own nails, and she doesn’t have to bend like a pretzel so that i can get the clippers situated just right. and she can see everything that i’m doing, no surprises. i don’t fill the sink with water and toys, just let the water run while i’m working on getting the nails trimmed. but, you could have a special toy that only comes out when it’s time to trim the nails. when the trimming is over she’s ready to wash them really good. do you have a nail brush? i think they tickle like nothing else, but kids love stuff like that! just be careful in case those little hands are slippery! save the soap until after the clippers are put away. and i think i have the same nail clippers!December 9, 2012 – 7:48 amReplyCancel

  • Nina - LOL I completely understand. Especially since I amputated Hannah’s arm off at the elbow cutting her nails once. At least that’s how she remembers it.December 11, 2012 – 10:39 pmReplyCancel

    • admin - Ha! That’s hilarious. Does she bring it up when she wants something? I’m pretty sure this will be used against me…December 13, 2012 – 6:53 pmReplyCancel
