The Four P’s

4PsPeeing, pooping, potty and “please?” are today’s four P’s.  You thought I was going to give you a marketing lesson?  Nah, if you don’t know what those four P’s are, you probably don’t need to.  What you totally do need to know, however, is how Tucker’s ABA potty training is going!  At least, I think you need to know…um, if you don’t want to know, go read something sentimental or funny.  Still here?  Huh.

As you may know, Monday was day one.  By the time Robert got home, I’d spent the majority of the previous five hours crammed uncomfortably on the bathroom floor.  Overall, day one went pretty well although Tucker decided it was way too risky to poop.  As in, at all.

On Tuesday, he did a better job waiting for longer periods of time and peed in the toilet as soon as we came home from school.   Thinking that I’d have a few minutes to go unpack his backpack and put away any leftover food from his lunch, I did.  And heard “uh oh?” less than two minutes later.  He’d not only produced a masterpiece poop in his pants, he managed to pee like a champ.

In his pants.  On the floor.  Everywhere.

I had to put him in the shower.  Normally, giving Tucker a shower means that he gets super excited about the idea and then actively avoids getting wet.  Aww, cute, right?  Not so adorable when I became completely drenched trying to wash the poop off of him.  At least I can claim to have multitasked (shaved and washed my hair while I was all wet anyway).  I later had to run out and left Robert in charge.  I came home and Tucker was wearing a diaper.  I heard something about Robert not being able to sit on the bathroom floor because of his bad knees blah blah blah.  Mmm hmm.

Wednesday, it clicked.  Tucker held his bladder for longer and longer and he did amazingly well about peeing in the potty pretty much every time (and accidents were tiny).  But.  He didn’t poop.  Thursday he did an excellent job as well.  Honestly, I’m totally impressed with the ABA potty training method.  Prior to beginning, I’d imagined weeks and weeks of accidents.  We haven’t had a real accident since Tuesday’s gigantic one.  Tucker also hasn’t pooped since then.  Which is a bit frightening as it’s now Friday…

Anyway, I’m hoping that the first poop since Tuesday happens at school.  Although I’m mom and “know best for my son,” I’m pretty sure his teacher will get that poop in the potty on her first try.  Sometimes it’s okay to leave the icky stuff to somebody else.  Right?

UPDATE:  For those of you who are on the edges of your seats wondering whether Tucker pooped at school today, the answer is no.  He’s napping now (in a diaper, which is allowed during naps and night sleep).  I’m not sure what to do when he wakes up…keep him in a diaper?  Buy a suppository?  Call the doctor?  Set him on the toilet with the iPad and some movies until it happens?  Poor little guy.  That CAN’T feel good.

In totally unrelated news, look how these people found this blog.  Awesome with a side of chips, right?  I mean, really.  Mom loves boy and mom boy love?  Awww!!!

  • Emily - I’m all for the teacher handling the poop! Sounds like he’s starting to get the hang of it though!January 11, 2013 – 5:38 pmReplyCancel

    • admin - Thanks, Emily! He is so totally starting to get the hang of it and held it for almost three hours today! YAY! (I still really hope he poops tonight)January 11, 2013 – 7:34 pmReplyCancel

  • Janine Huldie - Being that I just potty trained my second in a year’s time (yup my girls are 16 months apart), I feel for you about the pooping. My younger actually was the easier of my two kids and potty trained pretty quickly and didn’t have much issue with pooping on the toilet. My older was terrified at first and it took over six months before it truly clicked for peeing and pooping. It is a process sometimes, but don’t give up it will click, I promise 🙂 🙂January 11, 2013 – 7:18 pmReplyCancel

    • admin - Thanks, Janine, so much for the encouragement! I hope you’re right and that it clicks sooner than later. I feel so bad for him!January 11, 2013 – 7:33 pmReplyCancel

    • admin - OMG I have no idea but we just put him to bed without a poop, again. Argh! At the point considering pinkie + vaseline. For real. Mommy, for real.January 11, 2013 – 11:21 pmReplyCancel

      • Sara - Poor Tuck. I think we used to give Melody pear juice when she was backed up…. or there’s always prune juice…January 12, 2013 – 9:02 amReplyCancel

        • admin - He pooped in a diaper this morning thank goodness. And to think I’d almost given Robert a hard time about letting poor baby HAVE a diaper this morning. Sometimes, mommy isn’t right. Rarely, but sometimes. 😉
And no way in hell could I get this boy to drink prune juice. Maybe pear juice, though…thanks!January 12, 2013 – 9:04 amReplyCancel

          • Cathy - I used to give Stephanie (and one of my dogs with a similar problem) plums. They work just as well and they’re easier to eat.January 12, 2013 – 12:00 pm
